New Zealand No 32

From the New Zealand collection

Today there are five times as many sheep as there are people in New Zealand. In 1982 there were 22 times as many sheep as there were people. I don’t know who’s gaining or losing.

Australians consider New Zealand as slow paced. I’m from NY and I consider every place slow paced. It all becomes relative and subjective. But I did get the feeling in New Zealand of being in a time warp – 1950 something.

People were nice. Really nice.

Just before I went to New Zealand in 1994, I got a letter from a local photographer and in it he said he read about my upcoming trip to the conference in New Zealand. He offered to be my host. He wrote if I felt uncomfortable about this he would understand.

Who does that?

I agreed and the guy turned out to be Andris Apse (#36), who is one of the best photographers I’ve ever met.

New Zealand has temperate climate and snow-filled peaks, lovely landscape, not so many people, literally, so that there are less photos of people in this collection than in any other country collection. I’ve avoided the temptation of showing you how many sheep there are.
