Man in Striped Red and Blue with Yellow, Senegal Man in Striped Red and Blue with Yellow, Senegal

From the Senegal collection

I worked in Senegal in the 1970s. More than anyplace in Africa, it was a call to photograph the people.

The capital of Senegal, Dakar, was known then as the Paris of Africa. Nothing about that interested me. I was captivated by the people: fishermen, farmers, children, men, women.

I was lucky enough to photograph a Senegalese Lutte Wrestling match. It was in an open lot with a casual atmosphere. I understand that today it’s played in big stadiums with big ticket prizes and all the corresponding restrictions and protocols.
