Woman Head Only, Staring at Me, Shanghai

From the Shanghai I collection

In 2004 I went to Shanghai in conjunction with an exhibit I had there, sponsored by Epson, that didn’t take much time so I was able to spend most of my time shooting.

Shanghai impressed me. As a New Yorker I’m used to a big city with big buildings. Shanghai had buildings that demanded time and inspection.

Although I spent more time shooting buildings than usual, the people were, as usual, my main interest. People in pajamas in public were wonderful, lovers, tourists, red, white and blue houses.

And my hotel! I had been offered two choices of hotels– The Four Season for a shorter stay and the Howard Johnson for a longer stay. I took the Howard Johnson, of course. What I didn’t know is that they called it the Howard Johnson because they thought it would appeal to US tourists. It turned out to be a wonderful, luxury hotel.

Go figure.
